Beat the Heat: Staying Safe in Iowa's Summer Temperatures

Iowa summers bring dangerous heat, especially in July and August. Heat index can exceed 110°F. Heat safety: - Drink water regularly, even if not thirsty - Stay indoors during peak heat (11am-4pm) - Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose clothing - NEVER leave children or pets in vehicles — temperatures inside a car can reach 140°F in minutes Heat stroke warning signs (CALL 911): - Body temperature above 103°F - Hot, red, dry skin (no sweating) - Rapid, strong pulse - Confusion or unconsciousness Cooling centers: Call 211 or check with your city/county for cooling center locations during heat advisories. Check on elderly neighbors during extreme heat.
