Water Safety: Keeping Iowa Families Safe This Summer
Drowning is a leading cause of death for children ages 1-4. Keep your family safe around water this summer.
Pool safety:
- Never leave children unattended near water — not even for a moment
- Designate a "water watcher" at every gathering
- Learn CPR — it saves lives
- Enroll kids in swim lessons (check your local pool or YMCA)
Lake and river safety:
- Wear life jackets (Iowa law requires them for children under 13 on boats)
- Never swim alone
- Don't swim in flooded areas — currents are unpredictable
- Avoid alcohol around water
