The Office of the State Public Defender is responsible for coordinating Iowa's Indigent Defense System. Our mission is to ensure that all indigent persons in Iowa receive high-quality legal representation in criminal, juvenile, and other eligible proceedings. Led by the State Public Defender, our team of over 200 employees provides representation for indigent persons in all 99 counties, with support from private attorneys and nonprofit organizations.
